Left Heber Sunday at lunch and drove to Mammoth Springs. Hadn't been there in a few years. I was hoping for a little letup in the crowds but 'twas not to be. Visited the fish hatchery at the base of Dam #3. Beautiful grounds but plenty of trash. Seems they can't put out trash cans -"folks" steal 'em.
Fished at Bayou access Sunday evening late. When the gang of "folks" from the Riverside campground up stream went to supper, carrying their stringers (two or three each), I moved in and did well {by my standards} till dark. Best fly: #10 black stonefly nymph, yellow gills and split biot tail. Again Monday morning. Best Fly: Cerise San Juan, bounced on the bottom.
Note to self: Beautiful cold, clearwater, limestone stream. No didymo, no green pond scum. Minnows everywhere. 99% fish small stockers. Too many "folks", I guess.
Went to Saddle to see the South Fork of the Spring. According to the guy at SouthFork Resort, they got 3 inches of rain last week and floats are leaving every day! Very unusual for July. Anyway, this is the same thing ZHoyt is describing above only big enuf to float!
Brownies and Goggleye.....
