It is a great place to learn thanks to the great people who give so freely with their advice/expertise. Some of the best in the business on here! My wife and I have Winston LT rods, one is a 4wt and one a 5wt. We have been wanting to get a sinking line for them. Does anyone have experience in using these rods with sinking lines? Suggestions for what line to get? What do we need to look for in picking one out? The vast majority of our fishing is with smaller flies, 12 and smaller. We fish mostly in MO streams but occasionally get down to your area. I would rather get another rod for the sinking line rigs but that is not currently an option. Thanks, Keith

With a 4 or 5 wt I would recommend the sink tip 150-200 grain. A full uniform sinking line is probably to much for the rods. Stinnetti www.Springcreekoutfitter.net

I really like that rod for small fly stuff but now also want to fish some with a sinking line to add a few more opportunities. I was wondering if it would handle a full sink line, sounds like it might......but it will definately handle a sink tip, I will probably try that or an intermediate line. Keith

Cough cough..... Now John, that hurt my feelings on my first post! Somehow I knew it was comin' though sooner or later. On a serious note though, I am looking for 2 new rods. One to fish full sinking lines with now and then for trout and it would also double as a smallmouth rod. And I hear that I need a 10' rod for serious nymphing. So tell me what Sage has to offer! I have a really old Sage GFL 583-4 DS that I really have never used.

Now me, I am Winston all the way.. Should you eventually really want to throw streamers with uniform sinking lines go to the B2X 9.5 7 WT. Its a fishing machine. I really have no experience with the Winston LT so I'm not sure what to compare it with. Personally my nymphing and general trout fishing rods are the Sage Z-Axis. I'll move into softer rods for midge fishing and dry fly, especially if I'm fishing small streams. For sinking lines you have one true qualification, sensitivity. Casting may or may not be much of an issue but you certianly can not survive without sensitivity. In that regard Sage, Loomis, and certianly Winston use high modules graphite that transmits vibration very well and thus are sensitive rods. As a general rule the less expensive rods are not nearly as sensitive although there might be a few exceptions. Welcome to the forum!

My though was to cast several different rods before I pick one out. The B2X is on my short list to cast. Just have to forgive JW, maybe someday he will see the light. just kiddin' ya John

Wanted a sinking tip for streamers and such, but didnt need a huge length. It sinks well, but also leaves plenty of floating line to identify where it is(for those of us that arent overly experienced). Just throwing that out there. No experience with Winston here. I assume yours works well with your 6 wt.....

Overall, the B2X would be a bit better tool for sinking lines/big ol' fat streamers than an LT would be. I know; I know. You did NOT talk about streamer slogging, but that is a VERY effective style of fishing on "our" rivers. If ya don't do some of it, you're simply excluding yourself from some pretty exciting fishing. Your LT's - for those who like that style of "action" - are truly exceptional tools within the "ranges" and purposes for which they were designed. But until you get into the "big" 6-weight that stinnetti uses, I think there are a LOT of better rod choices for sinking line useage. If you're going to get a sinking line of some type for the LT's, then PULEEEEZE do NOT get a full sinking line for those rods. They are soft and sweet - again for those who love that style of rod - but they arel NOT designed to handle a whole lot of "chunking". It's the physics thing again; a "stiffer" or "faster" rod is a bit more versatile than its "softer"counterpart..... when you add in big ol' streamers or heavy, multi-fly riggs & big indicators ...... but it STILL all boild down to what casts best for YOU. For the LT's you already own, I've fished some of 'em with a RIO "VersiLeader" in the 7' length. That leader simply loops onto the end of your line, and you can get that leader in various sink rates. The "Trout" version has a clear, 12-pound test tip wherein you can put a perfection loop, upon which you can then loop whatever size of fishing-sized tippet you need. Cary
