Made my annual trip to Gulf Shores Alabama again this year, but this time I took a 7 wt., 9 wt., and my new kayak. We stayed in a beach house out by Fort
Morgan, beach on one side, bay on the other-- both about 75 yards away.
Hey zhoyt, I finally bought a kayak. Thanks for the inspiration. I bought a WS Tarpon 100.
I had a guide lined up but he stood me up...I never could get him to answer or call me back...what to do? I went to the Marina next to Tacky Jacks and talked
to the lady at the counter who had lived there her whole life...she had lots of local knowledge... "Any one here do guided kayak fishing?" I asked.
"Oh, Gosh, NO, are you crazy, sharks and aligators in the bay?" she said. Hmm..."Well, do you know of a good place to go?" I asked.
"Oh sure, I have some crazy friends that go right up the road, here...they always catch fish..." It was about a quarter mile from our beach house
to a little cove off Bon Secour Bay that was right next to the road. It was part of the Bon Secour Nat. Wildlife Refuge. Beautiful marsh, real convenient,
and sheltered from the wind. Fished 5 out of 7 days. First day I spinned fished (no confidence in my flyfishing) but after that I just carried the flyrods.
Hey, I'm a salt water fly fishing virgin. Most of the tips/know-how I got were from this forum...get a saltwater line, everthing eats clousers, look for
current or holes, etc. Thanks, Uncle Cary, JW, Gonz, and the rest of you gurus. If you want kayak fishing info, TexasKayakFisherman.com is THE BEST forum I
found. I got that off this forum, too.
I had a blast. I went in the mornings at sunrise and fished till 9:30 or 10, just about the time everyone was getting up at the beach house. Since I just
fished in the mornings, I just rolled with the flow(tide actually) and just took what conditions the marsh gave me. I'm sure I would have done better if I
had paid attention to the tides and fished accordingly.
I watched Ospreys and Brown Pelicans. The kids (me too!) played in the surf with the kayak, too.
Didn't catch much of any size but caught lots of "rats" (under slot redfish), white trout, and a few specks. I told my wife before we left that
my goal was to catch a least one legal redfish or speck. My last day I caught a 14 inch speck (char/white clouser) on my 7 wt...it jumped 4 times...and it
made my week. Seemed to me that the faster I stripped my clouser the more fish I caught. (I finally figured that out towards the end of the week.) The
flyrods and the kayak will be going back to the beach from now on. I will try and post the bad pics I took.
