In the 5 years I've lived a mile from Gastons, this is about the 4th mishap, the first involving fatalities. I'm told the FAA has no jusisdiction over private air strips. ??? |

Click here - Baxter Bulletin says it was taking off...
Yep... A friend of mine died while trying to land there back in the early 90s I think it was... Looks like this may have been too much cargo with not enough plane...

I would be suspect of the plane being over loaded but more likely the plane was stalled on take off due to pilot error or a power setting error.
First is is unlikely that he had more passengers than what he landed with. It is unlikely that he had more luggage than what he landed with. Since Gastons does not have a fuel facility it is unlikely that he had more fuel. Also since it was early in the morning it is doubtful that air temperature or density altitude was a factor. Gastons being a grass strip is subject to moisture and thus a plane does not develop as much speed for take off. The pilot likely tried to take off, he was heavy, on a wet runway, and looking at a mountain and trees at the end of the runway. Especially if he attempted a take off towards the lodge. If he didn't have enough speed to fly the plane will virtually stall and the nose will dip straight into the ground or fall off to one side or the other. From the eye witness report they said it was wobbeling badly which would account for low airspeed. |

Not sure if they're all that small, but the planes I saw parked out there when we drove through and took a look at the place a few weeks ago were so small
I don't see how it'd be possible NOT to overload them.

It was taking off. First reports were that it went into the river. 10 minutes later the reports changed. Scanners you know. Here is the only pic I took that came out. T-bird has some from the other side of the river. Officials were all over the place. The pic is from the river. What we are hearing here is that there were two adults and three teenagers and two of them died. Gastons does or did sell AV fuel for these planes. John you've seen the pumps and I've watched them fuel planes for years.... but then I've been gone for awhile. J

This is the second fatal accident in less than 6 years. The previous resulted in 3 deaths when it hit the bluff close to Stetsons, one of which was a flight
instructor.
Monday there was also another incident when a brand new aircraft on its first flight with the owner failed to lock down the nose gear, not sure what was the actual cause as the FAA were due to investigate the incident. There was no injury so far as l am aware. The plane was pushed to the far side hedge row of the runway pending the investigation. If there was any damage to that prop that will be a very expensive engine repair. JW, is probably right about the cause given the circumstances. Either way it is a sad loss. Here in the US it is easy to obtain a private pilots licence and if you can afford it a plane. Not so in the EU, in fact one of my recent customers works in the industry for Cessna and told me that new regulations in EU are making it more difficult to sell aircraft overseas, which includes many other countries. Private Pilots | #20 | ||
|
Being an ex Instructor Pilot in the Air Force and a Commerical Airline Pilot with 25,000 flying hours I would like to comment. The problem is the amount of
flying time involved. Most of these type of accidents are due to the pilot's judgement, not flying skills. The private pilot course has enough time to
teach the basic flying skills, but not enough time to teach the judgement "process". The capabilities of the aircraft, the weather, the pilot's
experience etc. Don't know if still true but a few years ago the highest accident rate amoung private pilots were Doctors.
