I have a question. I've been around for awhile now. I see these adds for "hand tied flies". As opposed to what tied flies? Are there such a thing
as machine tied flies?
 Does
hand tied mean American, African, or Far East tied?

I always wondered the same thing. Maybe they mean with out a vise, but I doubt it.
I think they are just dumb and repeat what others what others wrote. |

Hand Tied is short hand for OFF SHORE and Poor Quality.

There is as yet no way a machine can produce flies, as a machine is not able to select and prep material and manipulate it as human hands. I fail to understand why they need to say hand tied as there is no other way it can be done. Certainly there is some utter crap produced overseas, on the other hand there are some of the best flies in the world tied overseas. Umpqua flies area prime example of that and they have been doing that longer than most have fly fished to day. So far as l am aware of they still have the largest number of signature series flies, Rainy is becoming a close second. There are at least 5 other companies that l know of who also produce good stuff, probably 90% of flies available in stores come from these sources. The remainder are from home tyers, and a few who offer mail order crap from low cost sources. Kenya is one of the sources for low quality flies with a price related. I can buy flies from some of those sources for as low as $2 a dozen, they last no time and are simply not worth it. Davy
