Mountain Home is Mecca in March for fly fishers
The 2017 Sowbug Roundup, a “Celebration of Fly Fishing,” will be held on March 23, 24, and 25 in Mountain Home, Arkansas. The event is celebrating its 20th anniversary by showcasing exhibition fly tyers, both domestic and international. 114 Exhibition tyers, including folks from Japan, the United Kingdom, and Denmark, will demonstrate timeless skills and share new techniques and materials.
The admission fee of only $5 covers all three days. Further, if an adult brings a child under 12, BOTH get in free. The seminars, all free with admission, include kayak fishing, Tenkara, fishing techniques for the area rivers, casting classes, a special program for women who fly fish, and a variety of other topics. There are special events for the kids including a free drawing for fly fishing gear. A specially selected group of vendors showcase fly fishing, fly tying, and related goods and services. Dave and Emily Whitlock and several of the premier rod vendors have been regular attendees for many years.
Be sure and bring your fishing gear. The Sowbug Roundup event is only 30 minutes away from walk in access to two of the finest tail water trout streams in the country, the White and the North Fork. Low water will be available on at least one of our tail water rivers for the week of Sowbug. For children under 16, Dry Run Creek is an absolute must. The kids catch four different varieties of trout from this stream, many of a size that most adults only dream about.
Mountain Home is located in the beautiful Arkansas Ozarks minutes from the White River and the fabled North Fork River tail waters. Both rivers are renowned for their huge brown trout. From here, there is easy access to Branson, Missouri and the Branson-Springfield Airport. Because Ozark weather in March is usually quite mild, the area is a sought after destination for visitors from the more northern states. The March Caddis hatch on these rivers provides truly memorable dry fly and soft hackle fishing. Sowbug Roundup 2017 provides a great excuse to step out of winter and experience fly fishing some of the country’s finest tail waters.
Over the years Sowbug has cemented its reputation as a high quality offering in a warm and friendly atmosphere, so make your plans now. Don’t miss an opportunity to attend this event.
