Bill.

l have used the clear intermediate lines since they were first introduced by SA, now available from other manufacturers, but there can be differences so far as quality.
Indeed a 20ft leader attached to a weight fly is not a good option period, fishing small midges is another matter.
These lines were originally introduced for the stillwater market, soon after they became real popular for saltwater use, and still are.

I myself prefer the Rio Aqualux and Camo lux, which is same line but with intermediate color bands. Both are as good if you ask me.
In so far as extending a longer leader system then l will often use a clear intermediate in line wts 2 and 3.

In my book the two most important fly lines for freshwater fishing are a dry line and a clear intermediate. 1 to 2 ips, all be it there are other intermediate type lines that are not clear.

There was at one time a following for the clear mono dry lines, not even sure if they are still available, l did try them but not for long as l saw no advantage for use.
