I would suggest you obtain my friend Kellys DVDs related to this subject.

Streamer fishing for trophy trout
Advanced Streamer fishing
Tying articulated streamers.

Kelly has fished the White with me many times and nailed some very nice fish.
The rivers he fishes out west are fast moving systems for the best part, which is generally not what we see here unless we have very high water generation levels when only drift fishing is a option.

For myself l do not choose to fish weighted streamers other than minimal weight, it is the fly that matters to get the fly down to the right depth and that may be choices between a dry, intermediates, sink tips to ultra fast sink depending on water speed and depth, wade or drift fishing. Further how you wish to fish the fly, slow or fast as both leader length and line choice are very much related so far as how your fly is seen by the trout.

In the case of the White river my top streamer flies are zoo cougars, black marabou muddler and sculpin version of my own which is more or less olivy/brown.
Also large marabou jigs can be deadly, if you fish them right and can cast them.

I would also take a bet that if our fish were not accustomed to seeing crank baits, countdowns on a daily basis and all else we would catch way more with the fly rod. They wise up to seeing lures pulled off the banks at right angles.
