I also fished the loughs in the Orkneys and this is a astonishing fish of size for the wild windswept waters of that northern region. Fish of 15 ins or less are the norm.
It was almost certainly sea trout that ventured into the lough on its way to spawn, or at least one of the lough trout that feed in the estuary regions of salt water which is common for Brown trout for those regions.
If you guys ever fancy to fish for a true genetic strain of Brown trout add these waters to your list. Never been stocked.
