Here we go again. Going to title this fishing in the park and wildlife four legs and two legs,
Into the park we went for a couple of days before we had to go home. Got the biggest bargain of the trip with a three day license for fifteen bucks. There isn't much you can do away from home for five dollars a day but here in the park you can! Pat opted not to get hers? I am thinking what is wrong with you girl? Maybe she is wearing out or thinking she will not catch anything without a real guide? We end up in the Slough creek campground. I have plans to fish Slough creek after setting up the camper. Got the last spot in the campground at shortly after noon. If you plan on camping in the park get there early or make reservations. We ran into many full places there. Slough creek was muddy and right at the trail head where the campground ended there was a sign stopping you from going any farther. Bear activity in the area / no entry:) After seeing John's post from Alaska the bears just fish along side you don't they? Well ther just had to be another creek that dumps in to Slough at the campground called buffalo creek. The campground host said it was full of small rainbows, very small he said again. Up it I go fishing. Yes I caught a bunch, I mean a bunch but I have opened a can of sardines that had larger fish in it. Will not and did not complain because of where I was at. A bit on edge looking out for grizzlys after seeing the no traspess sign and seeing piles of bison bones all over. Now to two legged wild life. Here is our camp at slough creek,
Notice Slough creek behind the truck? Not too far away. Well later on in the Evening here comes a dust cloud down the road. It is a 1-800 rent an RV doing ninety to nothing like they were driving down the German autobhan. bang bang bang over the rocky road. Screeching to a stop and setting up there mobile home. Here this couple come heading by out camper carrying a half gallon pitcher and a cooking pot. They go to a well pump to fill with water. Pat and I can here them talking but it is in a language we don't speak. Lots of euoropean visiting the park. With our low dollar trips are a bargain and it is nice to see them leaving there money here in the states. Get this they take this water and try to pour it into the fill hole on the side of there rent RV. Guess they were low and needed a bit? That is all they got in there for sure. Ok remember the creek behind the camper? These folks grab a towel and head for the creek. I'm thinking they are going to wade in the cool water? Nope , it's bathing time. I could not see her but he gets into the water and starts splashing around. Lots of brush and twigs in tha way but you knew this is what he is doing. Pretty soon he is walking across the campground with a towel around his neck in his tighty whities. Pat and I just laughed. Then the lady takes his place in the water, more in the open. Shirt comes off and she goes splashing in the water. Am I really seeing this? YEP. Top clean and yes off goes the bottoms. Got to grab the binouclars to see if this is really happening again. YEP again. All washed up and back to the camper she goes. You remember when fishing a pristene mountain stream somewhere there is most likely someone bathing upstream:) Ok this is all for two legged wildlife. On to fishing the Lamar river.
Pat dropped me off and I headed off to the river. I had been told at a fly shop to fish the cut banks and look for rising fish to cast to. This I did and caught more cutt's. I am thinking it doesn't get any better than this. I spent about two hours working up stream hitting what I call gravy fish. About a mile. We had no plan on how Pat was to pick me up but she knew I was walking up river. During this trip I started early. later on in the morning I notice guides and others starting to gather to fish also. get there early friends as it gets busy about ten o'clock in the AM. I caught the gravy fish for sure. At least twenty cutt's. I am not a fish counter so this is my best guess. I was fishing one place which was the farthest I was from the road. As I was fishing I notice four people heading for where I was. They looked over the bank to see me and there response was like the wind had gone out of there sails. I pointed up stream and headed that way and smiles desended on there faces like I had given them a lottery prize. I work through more gravy fish to see a couple of people head to the river around a hundred yards ahead of me. One breaks off on a bee line towards me? I am thinking what is going on? A nice lady approaches to say I want to apologize to you? Huh I say? We did not mean to get in front of you she says. Again she says she is sorry. My goodness I tell her there is more river and plenty of room here. She explains she has had her rear chewed from guides and other people for doing a walk this close to anyone. A hundred yards away? Good grief I tell her where I come from it is combat fishing and life is too short for madness over such things. No one owns this river and I know some fly-fisherman look at things other ways than I do but a hundred yards? I give them the water and head up to the road where Pat just happens to be waiting. What luck this gal can read me like a book. She asks me if I caught. YEP, and then she responds sure wish I had got my license. HA I told you so. We can get you one for tomorrow. Last days post with photos after my fingers rest from all this typing,
Marty
