Darryl Bowman weighed in on the issue a year or two ago in the first wave of concern. IIRC his take was that the Lamprey 'hitch a ride' to the spawning grounds. That would equate with your observation.

FWIW I pinned down the date of my first awareness of the presence of the Lamprey. It appears in a photo I shot of the leapers at Dry Run when I took my step-daughter and her husband over to witness the run on Thanksgiving weekend of 2003. Dunno how to post the pic, but it was shot with a cheap Polaroid digital so the quality isn't anything to write home about.
