Catfish on the fly...?? |

|
I am up in central MO right now visiting family and naturally had to bring along my gear for some day trips. I was sequester at the house yesterday by family,
but not to worry the 2acre pond has some nice sized fish in it. With all the recent rains the pond was running over the spill way a little and creating a nice
current that swept past some vegetation and nice hiding places for the fish. I was striking out on my presentation and not catching much, so I got
creative...which usually doesn't work... and tied on a size 2 plastic worm hook with a 5in purple plastic worm on it. I put it out into the current and
was not pleased with my cast..it landed dead center in the current instead of near the structure I wanted to fish...but I let it drift anyways. With the
weight of the hook the worm made a slow decent as it traveled along and then stopped and started moving at a right angle to the current. I set the hook and
was shocked when the line started peeling out of my hand and then off the reel into the backing. I am not fishing heavy duty equipment here..5-6 weight rod
with about 8ft of 8lb mono on the end. I was running up and down the dam fighting this fish in and out the whole time not having any idea what was on the
other end of the line. Finally after about 10min I bring in this 8lb channel cat!! I had no idea there were even catfish in the pond, or that one would take
a plastic worm. I haven't caught a catfish for 10 years, and those I caught were always on chicken liver. However, it was a heck of a lot of fun and I
spent the rest of the afternoon trying to catch some more. Who knew fly fishing for catfish could be so entertaining!!

They will knock the heck out of a zonker. You just have to fish it very slowly.

Catfish on a fly rod is a LOT of fun! Most people think if you fly fish, you only fish for trout... Of course, I don't mind them thinking that cuz if they
find out the secret, EVERYONE will want to fly fish... LOL
Sounds like a good time! If there are any bass in the pond, go out with a nice big popper and have even MORE fun! Also, bluegill on a small popper with some sort of small bug under it is a lot of fun as well...

though i don't target catfish on the fly, i have caught several. usually on a black streamer of some sort, but have caught two or three on a popper. my
biggest catfish on the fly rod was caught on a #10 red squirrel nymph.

Caught a 4lb channel on a black leach in a pond with a 7'6" bamboo built for me by Leo Eck out of bamboo I gave him. Later caught a 24" brown
below Jon's Pocket. Thought I would never land them!!

Ya might be a bit early but the channels will be spawnin soon and on the surface. They will take aStimulator onthe surface directky on--not to the side where their feelers 'feel' the tleader. Gotta catch em the right mood on the surface buta 10 pound cat on a 4 w is fun.!! Can catch ny freezer limit on a fly rod during this time but not sure it beats sittin in a lawn chair on a summefr evening with some friends and a cold one in hand, God bless--reuel
