Hey Troy how is the winter / spring steelhead fishing south of Anchorage through Juno? Are you plugged in on that yet?

Sponsor?? All you need is a plane ticket, man. I've got a 2000 Toyota 4Runner that's totally reliable and can sleep two in the back (you stay in your
sleeping bag and I'll stay in mine and we'll get along just fine...). No, it's not the Hyatt, but it's free and we only sleep in the daytime
so it's nice and warm anyways...
The water was low and clear on many of the southeastern streams this winter/early spring, as I understand. I would guess that by now, the runoff should be swelling the coastal rivers and the steelies are probably thick. I have not made it down there myself, with this 8 month project I've been on. Told the boss that I'm taking a month off -- maybe two -- when this is over in a few weeks. After that, not sure what kind of schedule I'll have. I'm thinking of going back to rotating 3 weeks on/3 weeks off. Will be living in TX most of the days off, except summer. I'll probably work my 3 weeks, then take a week off to fish up here, a week in TX, and another week up here fishing before heading back to work. That would be from July through September. Wintertime I'll be down there for my full 3 weeks off. The only time that I know for sure that I'll be in Mt. Home will be for the bamboo gathering in October. If I can make it before or after that, CAKE! If you want to fish big, wild steelies, you need to plan ahead and fish the Situk. Stay at the Glacier Bear, fish the "unusual" time schedule. Don't get up at 06:00, eat breakfast, shuttle to the bridge, float down with armada, leapfrogging all day. You'll get frustrated fishing over skittish fish all day, and may not catch much at all. Fish it when the other anglers AREN'T, and you'll have a blast. Carry a stainless Mariner (shotgun) with you and you'll be fine. Pepper spray should also work in lieu of buckshot. I actually have never seen a bear over there in the spring, but have seen some tracks. Anxious to get fishing! Troy |

Boy, you just talked my wife into that part, Troy... LOL... Her standard answer to me suggesting we go fishing is that she is not "getting up at the
butt-crack of dawn" to fish...
As for the plane ticket, that's what I need the sponsor for... Someone to buy my tickets.

Usual time is when people are typically active, like from 07:00 to 19:00. That's the biological clock that most people live by. So, either get up 3 or 4
hours earlier then them, or stay asleep 6 hours later and start out in the afternoon behind everyone else -- but fish all night. I typically fish in the summer
from 9:00 at night until 04:00 or 05:00 when the early birds start waking up. Believe me, it works... You have the most aggressive/willing fish to play with,
and all the space you need. You'll never have to complain about the crowds if you just shift your schedule by about 12 hours.

Dan,
Take a look at the short section titled "Watching Your Backcasts" on page 79 in Jason Borger's Nature of Flycasting ~ a modular approach. Sums up this thread nicely in four short paragraphs with a critical point we haven't touched upon here. If the caster turns to look as the cast is being made it often results in a twist in the torso and moves the rod out of plane. After the backcast is complete, and the hand has stopped, he recommends "turning your head only to see what it all looks like". He also goes on to say "do not let it become a habit. Watch your casts to get an idea of how tactile sensations relate to line appearance, then practice normally." Jim |

Jim, Just finished that book a few weeks ago. Very well written and I enjoyed his "modular" thing. Can really help building a difficult cast in
some situations or in just thinking things through. Especially his mending section. As a learning tool I see it helping certain types, some probably not all
, but we all learn differently for sure.
On a long cast I'm going to watch no matter what. If you are watching you will very quickly recognize that curve track that you are referring to. Then easily make yourself track that path pure. Maybe someday I'll get as good as the rest of you and do it blindfolded

I rarely have my students look at their backcasts, unless I really want them to see it so that they can change it. The other time I have them look is if they
are making a presentation on the backcast.
I often look at my backcast when I'm making an extra long cast on the forward cast. Otherwise, I don't look too much. I, of course, look at it alomst all the time when I'm making a presentation cast on the backcast. Mark |

I often watch my backcast when lawn casting. On the river, I often tend to pause my backcast so that I can turn and inspect it up close. I generally use a tree to accomplish this. |
