Dry Run Creek??

Posts: 4 12/20/08 22:58:36	Tags : None We're planning to attend Sowbug this year and this will be our first time to attend any of the events in Mtn Home. I have heard about Dry Run Creek, but I know basically nothing about it. My daughter will be 15 at the time, will she still be eligible to fish Dry Run Creek or is the age cutoff something lower than 15? If she is able to fish, can I fish with her or will my job just be to hold the net while we are on the creek? Any other information about Dry Run Creek or Sowbug that anyone would be willing to share? Thanks, Rex

Posts: 458 12/20/08 23:04:42 Moderator	Anyone under 16 years of age can fish Dry Run Creek, so she will be able to fish there but you can't. You can tie on her fly and net her fish, but that's basically it. If you are caught fishing, you will pay a very hefty fine. Greg

Posts: 5 12/20/08 23:31:05	Thanks Greg, after I posted my questions, I found the reports in the Norfork section of the board (I had looked in the wrong place), It sounds like a place that should not be missed and that I'd be busy with the net and the camera. OK, I'll continue with the stupid questions, I'm used to using a 3 wt for trout. Is a 3 wt appropriate for DRC or would a 5 wt or something else be a better choice? Thanks, Rex

Posts: 459 12/20/08 23:57:57 Moderator	There's nothing stupid about your questions at all, Rex. I think that a 5 wt is a good all-around rod for Dry Run Creek. There are some trout in that little creek that are literally as long as your leg, and if your daughter hooks a big one you want her to be able to land it as quickly as possible without over-stressing it and jeopardizing its chances of survival. A 5 wt will allow her to do that while still providing plenty of sport on the smaller fish. Also be sure to bring the biggest net you can find. You will be amazed at the size of the trout in that creek. It is truly a remarkable place. Greg

Posts: 10 12/23/08 15:09:06	Rex, I've taken my kids to Dry Run Creek for years and we know what to use and more importantly "where and how". However, that knowledge took a number of trips during various seasons to learn. During this learning period, the kids had some "less than stellar days". Since your daughter is already 15 and this may be her only trip to Dry Run, please make the most out of the experience... make it a memoriable trip, and hire a guide. If you only have a very limited time on Dry Run Creek, you will never regret hiring one of the guides who regularly post on this board to give your child the best chance of a very productive day, while Poppa works his best camera! My kids have been fortunate enough to have fished Dry Run with a host of excellent trout fishermen, including a number of whom are guides. The information given to my kids on these outtings by these friends was invaluable, and even if you're a good trout fisherman, most likely the assistance to your child given by one of these excellent guides will be worth every penny spent! Posts: 375 12/23/08 16:48:10	I will echo the above statement. After a couple less productive trips, we hired John Berry this summer. It was nice for me to be able to watch my boys catch fish while I captured the evidence with the camera. It really took the pressure off of me. I mention John because we had hired him, but have no doubt that any of the guides who post on this board would do great with your daughter. Good luck!
