Posts: 150 (10/24/08 16:46:09) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have been using this knot for about two years now and this is what I've found. The knot is just plain easy to tie and holds as good as any I have tried. Although - If you tie on a larger size hook with smaller size tippet you will have problems. I have gotten lazy at times and tried to tie on a size #8 or #10 streamer to say size 6X tippet and noticed if I pulled on the line it would slip around the larger hook eye and pull loose. If I use a smaller size hook with a smaller eye it holds great and seats itself properly. Also when you cut or clip the tag end make sure you don't pull on it. This will leave slack enough to cause failure from not being seated well to the eye of the hook. I have read reports of people using the knot for everything from trout to bonefish and other large saltwater species. I am a big fan and think if tied properly to the right hook size will serve you well also! I also like the non slip mono loop for streeamers and poppers that I learned from Cary (xiphius) at the last sowbug. Posts: 2675 (10/24/08 21:29:29) Norfork Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Duggie, I am not sure what is it you are having problems with. I use my knot for all x line down to 12 if need be. And for hooks down to 28. If you get the line through the hook eye you can secure the knot. There is one major point to remember when you snug the knot taught. Always hold the tag end and draw the knot down by pulling the tag, while holding the upper. As a rule l hold the fly and tag at the same time. After the knot has been set tight the tag can be cut, the knot will not slip. In the case of using a larger hook and fine diameter line, when you make the second over and under turn, do the same again, the knot will not slip, l have used this for tarpon and many other saltwater species. As a rule l would not be using a fine diameter line with a larger hook, streamers l would never go below 3x, at times more like 12 to 15 lb BStrain. Davy. http://davywotton.com. Then I hold the fly and the upper to set the knot to the eye of the fly. There must be something with pulling on the upper line, I should just pull on the tag to tighten the knot as you say, either that or I'm just not getting the knot seated quite tight enough before pulling it to the eye of the fly.

I basically was saying what Davy did in having the knot seated properly. Not as much about losing fish. I misunderstood I guess. Davy, As a rule I also do not tend to use smaller diameter line with larger hooks or streamer but like I said on occasion I have used a size 10 or even an 8 on smaller tippet just being lazy and not wanting to cut off a section of tippet and retie. John Wilson showed it to me earlier this month and I felt like it was one of the most important things I walked away with from Conclave. I have had it slip before, but normally I wasn't tying it right or didn't pull on the tag end to tighten. Haven't tried it on anything big yet. They have been using it several years now, and have some big money riding on it. It can be tricky till you get it figured out. Politicians and diapers should be changed often for the same reason.

Posts: 355 (10/28/08 15:08:37) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Duggie, My apologies for throwing my .02 in here late, I've been away from the computer for a while. I have experienced a similar problem with the Davy knot, though I seemed to have it more often when I was using it on 4 lb test on my ultra light. No matter what line weight, though, I found that by keeping the tag end secure while seating the knot did the trick. Of the numerous reasons I like the Davy knot, the biggest one is probably the fact that it's much easier to tie with cold fingers, as I have found I can "expand" it while I am tying it, then "shrink" it so I still end up with very little waste. This is really a big help in teaching my youngsters to tie their own knots, and I imagine as I get more farsighted in the coming years, I will also appreciate being able to "expand" the knot. Bottom "line" for me, though, was to always check how secure the knot was before casting. If the knot's going to fail, it's going to do it before I get a fish on the end of my line. I've never lost one yet from the Davy knot coming untied.
