Trip Report Thur. Nov. 5

Pulled into town last night about dark. Got up this morning and did a little work on the boat, trailer, etc. Figure I'll need it before too long!

They turned the water off about 11 a.m. and I made it down to the handicap access about 2:30 p.m. The Fork is still fishing good. If you can stand the crowds. The numbers (of fish) are not as high but still decent. Caught a nice bow first thing. Most folks seem to be catching some fish.

Who knows how long the water will be...

I usually try to stay off the Fork on Saturday's but since we are only going to be here for a few days this trip I said , "Why not." They cut the water off at about nine a.m. which allowed me to sleep in! Got to the handicapped access about 11:00 and was the first one up the river. Fished at Charlies and did pretty good. Once the water had fallen out they hammered the zebra midge on a consistent basis. Did fair on the wooly and got a couple on a sow bug. No big fish and all...

Norfork Minimum Flow

The other day some mention was made of possible minimum flow in ~2 years I believe on the Norfork. Is there a good idea of what the cfs might be at that level?

It looks like they are running about 1.5 units on the NF this morning...a change from their patters all week. With the lake still 4 feet above power pool, does this mean they will run pretty steady for a while? Not sure if they will back off cause of Conclave or not.

I was lucky enough to get to fish with some family this weekend. They've never seen AR fishing before and I was excited to introduce them to it. These guys know a great deal about trout and trout fishing, they're fisheries biologists out west. I'm sorry to report it was very poor fishing on the fork the last several days though. Quarry Park Ramp Closure 9/24

Does anyone know the details of this? I heard they were going to resurface that parking lot starting on 9/24. Is this a multiple day deal or just that day? Will the entire area be closed or can I use the old ramp (better than nothing). I was looking forward to a choice week day on the fork. Any info to help figure this out would be greatly appreciated. Or, someone I can call for those details would be helpful.

hey guys, coming up next saturday, finally, for some fishing and the conclave. can i count on the same patterns as last year, midges, scuds, san juan worms, and buggers??? any other suggestions, and anyone seeing trout rising to dries?? any info will be much apreciated!!

Sting Operations

It is about time we had another sting operation on the Norfork. Here are what I understand were the results of the two previous sting operations (reprinted). When 60-70% of the guides that are surveyed are committing game violations it is pretty much the wild west out there. Remember this is a "one day" contact with an AGFC officer. The fact that 60-70% were issued violations after a brief contact indicates a "real" problem.

So I am starting to learn the rivers around here, and would love some advise from the ole pro's. I have been fishing a couple times now at the Bill Ackerman access, and have gone both up and down stream with limited success. Besides the fact my casting is well, rough at best. Can someone advise on the best places for a novice such as myself to fish, and have some success. I have caught a few fish on a midge pattern, and a Y2K, and on one other. Fishing report 8/10-14

Fishing has been terrific. The water is as clear as I can remember seeing it int he last 4 years. You really probably don't need too many flies other than a zebra midge right now. A 50 fish day is extremely possible. San Juan worms are producing bigger fish on low water.

Trip Report 8/2

Fished from 830-1130 yesterday, caught probably 40 or better. Did well with small (#20) midges (any color) dropped off a #16 EHC and smaller soft hackles (#20). Did manage to pull a slam, one small 8 inch brookie. There were pleanty of all three others. Managed an awesome cut well over the 20 inch mark on my rod, it was a very long skinny fish. Seemed like it could use some meat on its bones. The fish were generally small except that cut and two other nice rainbows and a nice brown....

There is some good fishing to be had if you are willing to pay the price! Have been fishing the middle of the river and doing well. Fished Wednesday by myself and caught between 15 and 20 with about twice that many hook ups. Most on the wooly. Fished with Jack ( my brother-in-law) and his son Michael on Thursday and did fair. It was my first time to meet Mike and it was a real treat. He lives in CA. It was one of those days where we were getting plenty of hook ups but not landing that many....

Through the marvels of modern technology (a wireless modem from Verizon) I am now able to post while I am in AR and not have to wait till I get home.

It was good to see Jimmy T. and Davy at the AGFC meeting last night.

Been here almost two weeks and today was the first day for any "real" fishin. They had the Fork off until noon so I put the boat in and headed down river. If was foggy most of the morning but still very nice had the river to myself. Managed to land...

Disolved Oxygen Below State Standard

I received an email from Jeff Williams at the AGFC. The disolved oxygen on the Norfork is below the state standard of six parts per million. The Corps of Engineers is opening the vents on the generators and achieving the state standard during generation. Do not overplay fish and release them carefully during low water conditions, particularly on the upper river.
