Memories made at Dry Run the past two weekends

My sons, Chris and Michael, and I have had 2 great trips to Dry Run this fall. The first trip Chris, 15, caught alot of 16" to 22" trout about 50/50 Browns and Bows. He had 1 very large bow on for about 20 min. before it broke the line. Only 6x tippet, my fault. Dry Run was up and stained due to flash flooding , but did clear up when the rains would let up. We had a great time. Michael,11, was sick and unable to go earlier, begged me to take him . We were able to go this weekend,...

Coming down next weekend

We're coming down to see the grandbaby next weekend and while down that way, I'll be in Mountain River Fly Shop on Saturday from 9 am until after lunch to sign copies of my book. Come on by and visit! If things go according to plan, I may just have to wet a line afterwards to relieve the writer's cramps... LOL

The subject to change has happened. The shop is back to normal hours .. subject to change depending on high water or winter conditions.

With the low water and limited generation, fishing has been fun. I have been fishing the usual selections of Zebra midges and have been doing well. I decided to branch out a bit and took out a 3WT with about 15' of leader and tippet down to 7X. I tried a size 18 Red Hot .. red thread, red flashabou with a red tungsten bead and did okay. Then I went to a size 18 Desert Storm .. red thread, black tungsten bead and pearl krystal flash. On both patterns the "flash" is spiraled...

Had decided to put the boat in and fish the Norfork down from the dam but, when I got to the campground found out the boat ramp was closed as they were paving the "new" parking lot. When given lemons make lemon aid. Put in at the confluence and went up past the bridge and started drifting. Got into fish immediately. Wind starts blowing me up river that pretty much ended that. Can't drift? Get out and wade. Got his guy my second cast. Couple of more bumps more wind let's...

Pulled into town last night about dark. Got up this morning and did a little work on the boat, trailer, etc. Figure I'll need it before too long!

They turned the water off about 11 a.m. and I made it down to the handicap access about 2:30 p.m. The Fork is still fishing good. If you can stand the crowds. The numbers (of fish) are not as high but still decent. Caught a nice bow first thing. Most folks seem to be catching some fish.

Who knows how long the water will be...

I drove up from Memphis and fished on the falling water. Ended up being a beautiful afternoon. Fished from 2:30-4 at Cow Shoals and then 4-5 at Winkley Shoals. Cow Shoals was crowded, but not terrible. Caught several on a UV Tan Sowbug. Drove to Winkley and the fishing really picked up. I was using a Red A$$ under the UV Tan Sowbug. Every fish I caught was on the Red A$$. If you can make it to the Little Red during this window of wadeable water it will be worth it. Wonderful fishing day!

I got to JFK this afternoon and saw only 3 or 4 other folks fishing .. both spin and fly. After about 20 minutes it was down to one other fly fisherman and me. I caught a few fish on the 4WT and a size 16 Zebra. After awhile I changed to the new Flyrod Chronicle 3WT I won at the conclave. I put on a size 18 wine and copper Zebra with 6X. Hello everyone!! How is life down in Arkansas? I can't wait to get back down there again!!

Moose, how the heck are you buddy? Sorry I haven't been around. Been a rough year. We lost the baby, got married and are expecting again!! Girl or boy, I am sure it will be a fisherman!!
